Which DietBet Game Is Right for Me?

Choosing the right game environment and structure can be just as important as choosing which diet or exercise program to follow. Here's how to find one that's perfect for you.

You’re all fired up and ready to lose weight. Betting your hard-earned money on yourself offers just the extra incentive you need, so you create a DietBet account. Now what?

If you feel a little overwhelmed, you’re not alone. There are dozens of games to choose from, and it can be hard to understand the differences between each and know which one is best for you. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to break it down and find your perfect game.

Kickstarter vs. Transformer

The first thing to understand is that there are two types of games: Kickstarters and Transformers.

While the bet amounts and details differ from game to game, the basics are consistent. Join a Kickstarter and your goal is to lose 4% of your weight in 4 weeks; join a Transformer and your goal is to lose 10% of your weight in 6 months. That 10% goal is broken down into smaller, more manageable goals for each month-long “Round.”

Splitting games into those two categories should make it simpler! Your next step is to figure out which type you’re looking for.

If your ultimate goal is to lose a significant amount of weight and you’re looking to get started with a bigger, longer-term goal, then a Transformer is right for you. A Transformer is also a great choice if you’re hoping to establish healthy habits that will carry you through your life—practicing healthy habits for 6 months vs 4 weeks makes them more likely to stick once the game ends.

On the other hand, if you don’t have all that much weight to lose or want to shape up quickly for an upcoming event, Kickstarters are just the ticket. Kickstarters also work well for people who have varied or uncertain schedules and aren’t ready to make a six-month commitment.

Now, once you’ve decided on your game type, there are a few different ways to answer the question “Which game is right for me?”

Hosts, Themes, and Game Vibes

If all you care about is the structure and you just want to start ASAP, join one of DietBet’s standard games—they’ll be called something simple, like “The Weekly Kickstarter,” or just “The Transformer.” These don’t have a dedicated host, but you’ll get all the support of the other players plus the accountability of the game structure. The bet for a basic Kickstarter is $35 and the bet for a basic Transformer is $25 per month. New games start every week and all you have to do to get going is sign up!

If you’re looking for a game with something special going for it, you’ll want to dive into the Game Directory. Start browsing through games, and you might find yourself recognizing the names of some of the hosts! In January 2016, for instance, Extreme Weight Loss trainers Heidi and Chris Powell are hosting a game. So are Ali Vincent and Dolvett Quince from The Biggest Loser, and Shaun T., famous for the Insanity workout videos.

What does this mean for you? If you know you like a celebrity’s style or personality, there’s a good chance you’ll like participating in their game. Poke around in the “Activity” section of the game to see what kind of messages (if any) they post and what kind of interaction they encourage. If your host is a trainer or exercise expert, there’s also a good chance you’ll find specific workout advice or challenges.

There are also games built on shared interests, like using FitBits, doing Jillian Michaels’ workouts, or running. You might find that joining a game with like-minded people will help you stay engaged and interested. Plus, when you’re focused on the same things as your fellow dietbetters, you have built-in topics to start conversations and build community. Themed games can also include challenges that help you up your activity and reach your goals.

Size Does Matter

Another factor for a lot of people is the number of players in a game. From just three people to more than 1,500, the size of the group can have a big effect on your experience. Are you shy? Independent? Looking for friends? Interested in community? All of these considerations may play into what size group you want compete with.

Game size also plays a role in the last (but certainly not least) factor: the money! Different games have different bet amounts, and games with more players will have larger pots. Whether you want to stick a toe in and try DietBet without too much risk, or want to go all-in and play for high stakes, there’s a game with the right bill for you.

One thing to consider: Players win 30% more often when they bet at least $35! But never bet more than you can afford to lose—while we all have the best intentions and certainly plan to win, things happen and we can’t all win all the time. If you lose, you don’t want to suddenly have other problems because of the money you lost.

Can’t a find game that calls out to you? You can also start your own game! Whether it’s invite-only for you and your friends, or open to new friends you don’t know yet, you can control all the parameters and set the tone for what you want your game to be.

Good luck!  Find the right game and you’ll be on your way to losing the weight, winning some cash, and buying yourself a treat!

Make it WayBetter

Remember that you can play in up to six games at a time: 3 Transformers and 3 Kickstarters. If you're planning on losing the weight anyway, it's a great way to lose the weight once and get paid twice (or six times!).
